Why won't my new remote for Craftsman garage door opener model 139.53627SRT program properly?

I am trying to program my garage door opener remote. I have Craftsman garage door opener model 139.53627SRT. I purchased a replacement opener part number 53879 from Sears mail order. I have followed the directions but it is still not resetting. My old remote was 53779 and this one was mailed as a substitute. I replaced the battery in the old one, and the light is green when I press the button, but will not reset to open the garage door.

If the old remote is not working, take out the battery to disable it. Erase all of the existing codes in the garage door opener using the instructions in the image below. Reprogram all of the remotes using the SRT button on the motor unit. If you still have trouble programming the new remote, you could have a problem with one of the other remotes or with the logic board in the garage door opener motor unit.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
