Why must I have to push and hold the wall control button down in order for my garage door to travel all the way down?

I have a Craftsman garage door opener (screw type) #139.53992 and it won't close after I use the remote or the door control switch. It will stop soon after and return to the open position. This started this past winter when it was 20 degrees or less outside and now it will do it almost every time. If I hold the door control switch in place it will close. Any ideas why?

Your symptom indicates that the safety door sensors are not aligned properly if the opener lights blink (providing the lights are working). If the lights do not blink and the lights work you may need to increase the down force. I added instructions in the images below on how to adjust the down force and door sensor operation and adjustment. You most likely need to increase the down force just a little bit. This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
