doing a concrete overlay 2"thick on an existing porch 4x6 ft. w. 2 steps is a footing required??

ok this porch exists of interlocking brick. the porch itself is 4x6 ft with 2 steps. it looks solid but the bricks are rotting and steps are sinking.. So i can do an overlay on the porch but the steps need to be pulled out and rebuilt. So, I can pour the top part of the porch as is. And i will reframe to steps and pour them like it was a new porch.. I figured that i could knock out some bricks from the house as a keyway so the concrete will secure the porch that way and then run steel rebar through the porch into the steps. Now... do i need a footing for such a small porch. Or should one already be there. The porch is built so that both sides of the porch are against walls. The right side of the porch is the garage wall and the left side is the home itself!! and both steps touch these walls aswell. Please help asap. Im lost in canada thx...

Usually a footing is required to support the lower end of steps. This is primarily so that if there is any frost in the ground, the footings will not heave (although the ground might) and push the steps up. It really depends on your local building authority and code.

As far as the porch itself, it sounds like it already is supported by the walls on each side, which should have their own footings. If the porch is resting on these walls, then that should be okay. If it is sitting on posts beside these walls, then really you want to have footings, again so that the footings get below the frost line and prevent the porch from heaving.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
