Craftsman 1/2 HP bought in 1999 it just makes a clicking noise and does not raise or lower the door. How do I test and fix?
To check the "eyes" you can just look to make sure the led's on each of them are lit up. If they are, we can assume they are working as designed. On most models, if the eyes are bad, the unit will still function when using the wall control.
Most of the time when the door does not operate and you hear an audible "click" that is a relay sticking on the logic board. The relays (and any component) on the logic board on considered non-serviceable and the whole board will need to be replaced. You can take the cover off to where you can see the logic board. Then use a small screwdriver to tap on the relays (little black boxes on the board) while trying to activate your opener.More times than not the clicking is a result of a bad relay. I wish I had better news, but really that's about the only thing that can cause just the clicking and nothing else. If the door were trying to move and you heard clicking I would suspect a gear being bad. But just clicking alone is almost certainly going to be a relay.Member
