Why do my remotes only work within 1 to 2 feet of the garage door opener motor after being cleared and reset?

We tried clearing and reprogramming the remotes a number of times. We are down to the door opens with the button on the wall and with the hand held remotes, within 2 feet of the motor unit. Both of our units are having the same issue. I have reprogrammed a total of 4 hand held units. The keyless and my car built in units can't get close enough, so they don't work. How can we get these units to work with the remotes again?

Without a model number for the garage door opener, it is difficult to provide specific advice. Here are some general tips that may help you:

  • Most garage door opener motor units have an antenna that normally needs to be hanging down to achieve the the proper radio frequency range. See if your unit has an antenna and shift if downward to see if your range improves.
  • Weak batteries can sometimes cause remotes to experience this short radio frequency range. Try changing the batteries in your remotes.
  • Radio frequency interference from a nearby source can prevent the remotes from operating properly. If you have a new product that has just been added to your home, try unplugging this product to see if the garage door remotes will work properly.
  • Some units have a lock that will prevent the remotes from working. Check the settings on your motor unit to make sure that it is not locked.
If you need more help with this problem, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number off of the motor unit of your garage door opener(s).

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
