I installed a new drive and worm gear in my garage door opener. Can I test the motor before hooking it up?

It is a model 13953413.

You can test the motor without the chain being attached. The motor will run until the limit switch turns it off. When you have everything hooked up if the door doesn't open or close all the way you might need to synchronize the limit switch with the position of the trolley.

When you removed the worm gear you removed the small gear that drives the up and down limit switch. In the process of the repair the limit switch and the position of the trolley might have gotten out of synchronization.

You need to open or close the door and remove this small gear again. Manually turn the limit switch so the center contact almost touches the up or down contact to match the location of the trolley. Install the drive gear and adjust the up and down limits properly.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
