How do you change the frequency of a garage door opener?

my garage door opener had been working great until the other day when none of my car remotes worked, the only opener that worked was the one hardwired to the motor. I thought it was batteries, so I changed them, I also reprogramed them using the learn button, still nothing. Then I noticed that if i was 1 foot from the motor that it actually worked. The number pad on the outside of the garage also doesn't work. I've been told that it sounds like a frequency thing, that someone in the neighborhood, got something wireless that is interfering with the frequency. I was told you can flip some switches on the motor to change the frequency but I haven't been able to locate them yet. Hopefully you can help me, asking a technician to come out and fix it will cost more than buying a new one. I also think its a frequency thing too because, that same day that the openers didn't work my keyless entry on my car also doesn't work unless I'm within a foot from my car. At work my car will work.

Short range on garage door opener remotes is usually caused by radio frequency signal (rf) in the area. Radio frequency confuses the logic board in the opener and it doesn't open or close as it should.

To search for something in your home that might be causing rf, begin by removing the battery from 1 remote. If there is not change put that battery back and remove the other one. Unplug one garage door opener, if there is no change plug that opener in and unplug the other one.

If you have lost or replaced a remote in the past, search through drawer and couch and chair cushions for the missing remote and remove the battery. These are the most common reasons for short range.

To determine if the rf is coming from something in the garage or house, turn the house circuit breakers off one at a time. Try a remote after each breaker is turned off. If the range improves, the rf is coming from something on that circuit.

If you don't find anything causing the short range, you can schedule service and get a Sears technician to check the openers. Sears technicians carry a meter that will find the source of the rf signal.

There is no way to change the frequency of the garage door opener. The frequency is made into the logic board inside the motor unit of your garage door opener. The allowable frequency is assigned to each product, such as garage door openers, televisions and radios, by the FAA. We are not allowed to change it.

Sears sells 2 frequencies of garage door openers, that is the only way to change the frequency.

Sorry no answer. I am having the same problem. Have you figured out the source of your problem or an resolution? It is rather frustrating to have to enter through our front door every day.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
