I had bermuda sod put down last Spring. Now my bermuda grass has weeds all over it. The tops of these weeds are purple. What can I do to get rid of these weeds?
It is difficult to positively identify the weed that you are describing based on your description. Generally, bermuda grass weed problems are best prevented by spreading a pre-emergent weed killer in the fall. A broad application of a weed and feed may kill the weeds depending on the exact type that you have. If the weed has a broad leaf, you can usually spot spray the weeds. If your lawn is small enough, the best way to eliminate and prevent weeds is to pull them up by the root. In my smaller lawn, this is what I usually do. If the roots of the weed create a hole in the sod, I fill the hole back in with sand. This enables the bermuda to quickly grow over and repair the hole. If you have a sensitive variety of tiff bermuda, you may not be able to use some sprays or weed and feed products. Carefully read the labels of any chemical that you use on the lawn.
my experience with weeds with purple tops (flowers) was with veronica also known as speedwell. it arrives early in the spring and begins to flower. most broadleaf weed sprays do not stop it. you will need a spray for filoforms. it will be a never ending situation unless all your neighbors spray for it.
