My Craftsman Air Compressor Model 919.167790 is leaking air from a built in hole under the regulator knob. Why?

While using my Craftsman Air Compressor Model No. 919.167790 I noticed the compressor would not build up pressure to the approximately 175 lb. I then shut the compressor off and felt air leaking around the regulator. I unplugged the air compressor, released all the air pressure from the tank, removed the regulator ring, black knob and the console cover. It was then I saw a "built in possible weep hole" on top of the fitting where the black knob pulls up and down. This hole was where the air was coming from continually but I see no reason why. So I am without my Sears compressor till we solve the problem. Thank you in advance for you help.

The regulator has a diaphragm that lets the air from the tank go to the outlet line and maintains the pressure you have the regulator set at.

The hole in the regulator body is a "weep hole" as you suspected. If the diaphragm ruptures this "weep hole" lets the pressure out of the regulator body.

You need to replace the regulator on your compressor.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
