I need to change some parts in my chain drive automatic garage door opener.

The unit is a Sears chain drive model 139.53627SRT, 1/2 HP. The unit was manufactured in 1993. The drive gear has worn so thin that it has stripped (nylon gears). Sears sells a drive gear assembly that includes new bearings and worm gear for the drive motor. How difficult do you think this project will be.

I am sending you the instructions for replacing the gear and sprocket assembly. Read the instructions while looking inside the opener to determine how difficult the job will be. What might be an easy job for you could be difficult for me.

Unplug the garage door opener from the power. Loosen the chain at the trolley and remove it from the sprocket on the opener.

Remove the outer cover from the motor unit of the opener.

Remove the 3 screws that hold the sprocket and gear assembly to the top of the motor unit and lift the assembly out the top.

Remove the clip and the gear that drives the limit switch. Note the position of the door and of the limit switch. be sure they are in the same approximate positions when you reassemble.

Remove the screws that hold the motor to the motor unit housing and remove the motor unit. Mark the wires as you remove them so you can put them back as they were.

Drive the roll pin out of the motor shaft and slide the worm gear off the shaft.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
