Garage door opener Do repair instructions come with the part? It is part number 41C4220A for a Craftsman model 13953615SR. Thank you

I diagnosed the problem as a worn worm gear in my Craftsman Model 13953615SR 1/2HP Garage Door opener. It appears the complete assembly 41C4220A may be a better choice rather than just the worm gear alone since it's only $8.00 extra. I'm looking for step by step instructions to properly replace the worn parts. Are there any torque requirements? Thank you.

There are no written instructions for replacing the gear assembly. I am sending you some instructions we wrote up from experience. There are no torque requirements, tighten the screws and bolts "good and tight". Unplug the garage door opener from the power. Loosen the chain at the trolley and remove it from the sprocket on the opener.

Remove the outer cover from the motor unit of the opener.

Remove the 3 screws that hold the sprocket and gear assembly to the top of the motor unit and lift the assembly out the top.

Remove the clip and the gear that drives the limit switch. Note the position of the door and of the limit switch. be sure they are in the same approximate positions when you reassemble.

Remove the screws that hold the motor to the motor unit housing and remove the motor unit. Mark the wires as you remove them so you can put them back as they were.

Drive the roll pin out of the motor shaft and slide the worm gear off the shaft.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
