My craftsman GDO opens 6" then stops, does this 3-4 times, then will open. What's wrong?
The GDO is Model 139.53636SRT. The chain seems a little loose, it hangs about 2-3 in. from the "rod". The sensors seem to be in line. It takes 3-4 times of open-close -open. The outside temp is below freezing.

I think you need to check the operation of the garage door for binding and balance. Close the door so it won't slam if there is something wrong with a spring. Pull the emergency release rope on the trolley to release the door. Open and close the door several times and check for binding or catching on something. Lift the door half way and turn it loose. It it stays there it is balanced. If it opens or closes the spring needs adjusting.
If the door is ok and balanced, adjust the up force stronger about 1/2 an inch of turn. Attach the door to the trolley and try the door. You might have to adjust several times before it opens. Sometimes cold weather makes these kinds of problems worse.Join this conversation.
