My Sears garage door open runs about three seconds then reverses, without the chain on the sprocket. What might be the problem?

The opener runs a short period of time and stops. I have backed off the limit switches but that didn't help. I have removed the chain but it still will not work right. With the chain on, it would travel about 1 foot. Thanks for any answer you can give me

Hold the button on the wall control in and see if the door closes. If it does the problem is in the door sensors. If one or both led's is off, replace the sensors. If either led is blinking, the sensors are misaligned. If neither led is on, the problem is in the wiring to the sensors. (It is either broken or shorted by a staple). It can also be a problem with the logic board. You need to check the voltage at the sensors, it should be 4-5 volts dc. If you don't have the voltage, remove the sensor wires from the terminals on the logic board (in the motor unit). Read the voltage across terminals 2 and 3, if it is not 4-5 volts dc the logic board is bad.

If the door goes 1 foot with the wall control button held in replace the rpm sensor.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
