My Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener won't close. What causes this?

Both sensor lights are lit brightly. Problem happens with both the remotes and the wall wired remote. Door travels freely when opener is disengaged. Also the door starts down and abruptly stops through the closing process. It starts down, stops, You have to wait a couple seconds then push button to resume downward travel.

If the door is stopping but not reversing the problem is in the logic board in the motor unit. Any time the door stops because of a sensor or something wrong in the garage door that is causing it to be too hard to move, it should reverse and return to the open position. If the door is reversing the garage door might be binding or there might be a connection problem with the door sensors.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
