I replaced the worm gear on my Craftsman door opener and door won't travel more than about 12" now. Does it seem like an electrical issue, not mechanical?

It is a model 139.53970SRT, serial 23102C00344. I replaced/installed the worm gear. The trolley will now travel only 10-12 inches no matter where limits are placed. It reverses in what it thinks to be the down position of the 12 inch travel, but just stops at the "up" end of the 12 inch travel. When detached from the trolley, the door travels freely (no binding). The trolley travel is the same whether door is attached or not. The trolley recognizes the limiters when set to limits of the current travel. When the limiters taken out beyond, the trolley still travels only 10-12 inches then reverses (down end) or coasts an inch or so (not binding on anything) at top end. Force adjustments make no difference.

When you removed the worm gear you removed the small gear that drives the up and down limit switch. In the process of the repair the limit switch and the position of the trolley got out of synchronization.

You need to open the door and remove this gear again. Manually turn the limit switch so the center contact almost touches the up contact. Install the drive gear and adjust the up and down limits properly.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
