My garage door opener 1/2HP reopens after closing. The adjustment knobs don't seem to make a difference. What should we try? HELP

The brand is a Craftsman.

The down travel is adjusted too long. The motor needs to turn off just as the door touches the floor. Adjust the down travel toward less travel 2-3 turns. One turn of the adjusting screw equals 2 inches of travel. Keep adjusting the down travel until the door stops 2-4 inches above the floor. Each time you adjust let the door go through the complete open and close cycle. Adjust the screw toward more travel in small increments until the door just closes.

Always test the garage door after any adjustment to make sure the safety reverse works. Place a 2X4 edgewise under the door and let it close. When it hits the 2X4 the door should reverse and go all the way up.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
