My Sears garage door opener is stuck against the stop and still trying to go up. It won't reverse. Why?

Sears model 139.53300. My wife came home and put the door up via her transmitter. The door opened 6 inches or so farther than normal and the carriage is against the stop bolt in the rail. The motor seems to be trying to still move and when I push the button on the transmitter or on the garage wall, it doesn't seem to matter. I hear a click, like the motor is trying to reverse, but no movement. I tried connecting the leads to the motor directly to house current (briefly) to see if the motor would turn, but got the same result. I also tried reversing the polarity with my makeshift cord, but no change. I'm not sure what else to try. I haven't taken the chain off or anything. With all the internal drive gears being made of plastic or nylon, I didn't want to experiment too much. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Reverse the red and blue wires that go from the motor to the capacitor. This will cause the motor to run down when the opener is trying to make it run up.

Check the limit switch in the motor unit. The center contact of the limit switch should be touching the up contact. If it is the relay in the logic board is stuck closed to run the motor up.

If the contacts are not touching that is the problem. Look and see what you need to do to cause them to touch. If someone turned the up limit screw several turns this could cause it. The limit switch might be faulty.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
