My 22" Craftsman hedge trimmer won't start. I used it once and put fuel stabilizer in the mix. The carb's clean.

It is a model 358-796340 trimmer. I used it once with gas that had already been sta-bil treated for my other Craftsman tools. It worked fine then, and I started it again 4 months later. Now, 4 months after that it will not start. I've got spark, though it looks weak to me, and I have no clue how to pull off the flywheel to clean up the magneto. Obvious answers or any suggestion on how to pull the flywheel would be appreciated.

To determine if your starting problem is fuel or spark related, move the choke to full and pull the starter rope sharply 4-6 times. Remove the spark plug and see if it is wet. If it is wet the problem is spark.

Replace the spark plug before taking the engine apart. If you take the top off the engine you will see the ignition module mounted to the outside of the block. The air gap on the spark module should be .010-.012. You can remove the spark module and clean it and the magnets on the flywheel. You don't need to remove the flywheel.

If the spark plug is dry after your test, remove the air cleaner and be sure the choke is closing the intake of the carb when you move the lever to full. Remove the plug and pour 2 tablespoons of fuel into the opening. Reinstall the plug and the engine should start or nearly start for a few seconds. If the engine tries to run or starts and the choke is closing, your carburetor is obstructed with debris from the gas.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
