Why won't my garage door opener go up past 2 feet?

My garage door opener opens the door about 2 ft off the ground and then stops. When I pull on the emergency release handle the outer trolley works fine and travels without a problem from each travel point. I have had my door opener for 2 years and this is the first time it has ever failed to open the garage door.

Your symptoms point toward a need to adjust the "up" force on the garage door opener. This adjustment is described in the image below for a common Craftsman garage door opener. If you have a different model or need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your garage door opener.

i replaced the broken drive belt on my craftsman garage door opener. now having a lot of trouble getting opener to work. i disconnected the belt from the track. then manually lifted up the door. then brought the track to a position close to the motor using its own power. then connected the belt to the belt to the track. they lowered the garage door is the usual way using the control button on the wall - this worked fine, very smooth. they tried to raise door using same method - door went up about 3 feet and stopped. tried several times with same result. note - door springs are fine, same as before previous belt broke.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
