Why won't my garage door close properly when it gets cold?

My garage door opener acts up when it is cold. I press the door opener, the door starts to close, goes about 1 panel, stops and goes back up. This keeps happening, either opening or closing - when it is cold out. We put a rope on the door, next to the track, & when the door starts to close, I pull the rope to bring the door all the way closed. Sometimes it stays and other times it goes right back up. What do you think, can it be repaired or do I need to get a new door and door opener?

Without a model number for your garage door opener, I cannot be certain what is causing your problem. On many models, this problem could be caused by an up and down force setting problem. You may not detect the difference in force that the opener needs to shut or open the door when it is colder by testing it from the bottom. The image below shows the procedure for adjusting the force on a common Craftsman garage door opener. You may be able to use this procedure if you have the same (or a similar) model. If not, you can refer to the owner's manual that came with your garage door opener to adjust the up and down force. Many owner's manual are available on our website if you do not have your manual. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your garage door opener.

I had the same problem recently. I was able to fix it by simply cleaning and oiling the tracks and oiling the wheel bearings. I used a rag to wipe the inside of the tracks and lubricated them with white lithium grease. Next I used penetrating oil on the wheels. No more problem! If this doesn't work I'd try adjusting the force as was suggested.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
