I am planning to apply bead board covering to my garage doors along with some faux hinge straps and handles to give the doors a carriage house look. Not overloading the opener is primary. According to the Clopay manual on the doors they can range in weight from 175 - 400 lbs. Mine are somewhere around 200 lbs each and made of steel and foam insulation. The Craftsman door opener book doesn't specify how much lift power it has.
The garage door opener doesn't lift the weight of the door. If you release the trolley from the rail with the emergency rope hanging down, you should be able to lift the door easily by hand. You should be able to open the door 1/2 way and it will stay. This is called a "balanced door".
When you put the extra weight on the doors you will need to get a garage door company to adjust or replace the springs to compensate for the extra weight. The heavier doors will have to be balanced or the garage door opener will not work.Member
