My Craftsman garage door opener is not operating properly. It will not close. Can you help?

It is a Craftsman garage door opener, model 139.53673SRT. The door is in the open position. When I press the button, the motor hums, the door doesn't move. It hums again, turns off. The door doesn't move. The overhead light flashes several times. Both reverse sensors are aligned and the led's are lit. The LED on the PC board is flashing (5) times. Please advise.

Thank you for sending a good description of the symptoms from the garage door opener.

Five flashes of the led on the logic board indicates the problem is in the motor, motor capacitors, or the rpm sensor of the opener. Motors and capacitors seldom fail. I recommend replacing the rpm sensor on the opener. The rpm sensor is mounted on the rear motor shaft and has a plastic connector with 3 wires in it. Be sure the plastic interrupter cup is pushed onto the motor shaft as far as it will go.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
