My Craftsman 1/2hp garage door opener had a power surge. Now it will not even light. Is this a logic board problem or worse?

It is a Craftsman model 139.53985D. The main electric wire to the house grounded out.Too much voltage reached the unit. It will not even light, it is totally dead. Could it still be just replacing the logic board..or should the unit at least show some life?

The high voltage will ruin the logic board and the logic board would prevent anything else from working.

You should disconnect the power from the garage door opener and remove the cover on the motor unit. Check at the terminal block where the incoming power connects for burned or discolored terminals. If you have a volt meter, connect the power to the garage door opener and see if there is proper voltage to the garage door opener.

If you don't see any damage inside the opener, replacing the logic board should take care of the problem.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
