The rail on my new garage door opener is too long. How do I shorten it?

My gdo model 139.53985 is approx 124 inches long. The old opener is 117 inches log. The space that I have for installation is approximately 118 inches. How do I shorten the rail on the new opener?

You would have to shorten the rail 7-8 inches. You can cut the rail on the back side where the 3 holes are. You can only remove one hole. The other 2 holes are required so the rail will interlock properly. You would also have to cut an equal amount off the tapered end of the rail so it will slide into the shortened rail fully.

You will also have to remove links from the chain to shorten it accordingly.

This is a lot of work and you might want to get an installation crew to install the garage door opener.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
