Craftsman Riding Lawn mower model number 917.273642. I have compression and fuel, but do not have spark (engine turns over just fine). The spark plug and fuse are fine. I checked the seat switch with an OHM meter and it works fine. Is there a way to check the coil? This tractor has a Briggs and Stratton engine model number 31P777 type number 0348E1. Any other suggestions on what the problem might be? The mower was working just fine as I drove it around the yard, the lights were left on so I charged the battery and ever since then it will not spark/start. The battery is fine now, and jumping the mower does not work either - still no spark, with compression and fuel to the cylinder. Coil?? The mower only has 75 hours on it.
You can test the ignition module by reading ohms from the spark plug wire to the laminates on the ignition module. You should read infinity or open circuit.I recommend removing the blower housing on the engine and disconnecting the black wire from the ignition module. This is the kill wire and if you have spark with the wire disconnected something in the safety switches is grounding the module out. If you still have no spark, the module is bad.Check the connector on the seat switch. If it is not plugged on firmly it automatically grounds and kills the spark.
