Where sidewalk abuts foundation there is crack forming approx 30 ft long. How to repair? Thanks.
It appears that the sidewalk is settling - away from the house - leaving a crack approx. 1/2 inch wide between foundation and sidewalk. Water enters crack and I'm afraid this will wash out the dirt under the sidewalk and will eventually cause the walk to slope toward the house. We know what excess water around a foundation will do and would like to avoid the problem before it gets started. Thanks for helping.

It sounds like the sidewalk is tipping away from the foundation - this will help the rain water move away from the house. Only when the rain is being driven by the wind against the house, will cause rain to run down the walls and into this gap between the sidewalk and house - this won't happen every time it rains, which is good. However, when it does happen, you want to minimize the amount of water getting down near the foundation. At this point, I'd suggest filling the gap with foam backer rod (also called caulking backer rod). This is a round, foam product, available in various thicknesses. You can put it into the crack - then cover it with caulking. This product is used for gaps larger than 1/4", which caulking won't effectively fill. It provides some backup support, to minimize the amount of caulking needed. The best type of caulking to use for this application is urethane caulk.
