What do I do for hard soil in my yard?

I seem to have an area in my lawn where the dirt is extremely hard (even after watering).

Perhaps the area has a different soil type - this could have been the result of an excavation of some sort in years gone by. It could also be an area that was compacted at some point, such as by a heavy vehicle.

Try aerating the affected area - this involves putting some holes into the soil. If it's a small area, you could do this with a metal rod or even a long nail (such as a 12" spike). There are also aeration machines that you could rent, if the area is larger.

You can also impvore the soil by spreading a 1-2 inch layer of compost over the top. Earthworms will work it into the soil.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
