How do I program the keypad for my garage door opener?

Power went out, causing the programming to reset. The model number for my Craftsman 1/2 HP chain drive GDO is 139.53615SR. Once again, it is the keypad I am wishing to re-program, not the remotes.

There are a couple of different keyless entry systems that might have been used with that model opener.

Most of them are a newer-style keyless that is just the small keypad mounted outside your door and has its own battery for power. That style can be programmed as in the images or links below.

If your keyless has a wire running to another console inside your garage then it will have a battery (or plug-in transformer) at that console for power and you will also need to do any programming there at that console.

Program keyless with a console as follows

  • Pry open front panel of the console inside your garage that is wired to the keyless. Use a coin or screwdriver.
  • To set code, move program/operate switch near the battery to program position (keyboard light should flash). NOTE: If the light does not flash, check the cable and battery connections. Press any four numbers on keyboard. CAUTION: For security, do not use address, license or consecutive numbers (1,2,3,4 ect.)
  • Move the program/operate switch or OPERATE position (the keyboard light will go off).
  • Enter the code on the keyboard. If the door operates properly, replace the front panel on the console.
  • Loss of power to either the battery or the garage door opener will not affect the programmed code. However, if BOTH lose power, the code must be reset.

If programming either style of keyless does not work then you may have a low battery that needs replacing or you might need to erase the memory from the overhead opener itself so it can reset.

If you do erase the memory you will then have to re-program in all your remotes as well as the keyless entry but everything should then work properly again. Programming instructions for the remotes are in the Owner's Manual or, again, you can use the information in the images and links.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
