What kind of grass seeds to use in sandy/clay type soil?

Having trouble growing grass but have lots of weeds. Soil is very dry in summer months.

Lawn grasses aren't as much adapted to soil type as they are to climate and light. The solution in your case is to improve the soil first, by adding organic matter to the soil to improve its ability to hold moisture while still draining adequately.

If your lawn is small, you can spread 1-2 inches of crumbled sphagnum peat moss (available in big square "bales" at garden centers) and then dig or till it in to a depth of about 6 inches. Smooth with a garden rake.

If that's not practical, you can instead spread a 1-2 inch layer of compost (also available in bulk) on top of the ground. Over time, worms will work the compost into the soil.

Whichever method you choose, do it soon, so the organic matter has time to improve the soil before you plant seed, which you should do in fall or spring, when the weather is cooler and rain is more likely.

Plant a grass seed mix suited to your climate and the amount of light your yard receives. A locally owned garden center can help you choose the right mix -- skip this big box garden centers for this purchase. Keep in mind that if your yard is very shady, no grass will grow in it and you can isntead plant a shade-loving groundcover.

If the soil is dry during summer, water regularly. No grass does well in dry conditions. Lawn grass needs one inch of water a week. If using a sprinkler, set a pan out and turn off the hose when 1 inch of water accumulates in the pan.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
