How do I remove the Garage Door Opener Safety Sensors and still use the door opener?

Model 139.53975srt1 - I want to disconnect the sensor and still be able to use the garage door. Can this be done? Will I have to change the wires up on the box?

Rather than disconnect the sensors just relocate them above the center of the door. In some areas this may not be legal but it does work.

It is not possible to bypass the Safety Sensors.

For your opener to operate properly it has to be capable of generating enough force that serious damage or injury could occur if the door accidentally closed on someone or something. In fact, the safety system is considered so important that in most areas it is required by law.

If there is a problem with the Sensor System you can over-ride it temporarily by holding down the wall control button continuously until the door is closed. If you release the button before the door is fully down it will still reverse back open.

It will only close with continuous input at the wall control to assure that the operator will be in constant view of the door until it closes completely, and therefore the operator can be sure it is safe to close. Closing any other way could allow the door to move down when not in full sight of the operator.

The override is intended for emergency use or testing use only and should not be regularly used. Any issue with the Safety Sensors should be addressed as soon as possible. Often the cause is something as simple as a pinched or disconnected wire and there are troubleshooting tips in your Owner's Manual that should help you find the problem area. See the image below from your manual for more.

There is also additional information in the Sources Links below that might help.

If none of that helps you correct the issue then we recommend you consult a professional to assure this important safety feature is returned to full working condition and you can be certain your garage door is safe to operate.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
