I have a shaded area in my back yard that I have just planted some ferns, hydrangea, hostas, etc and wanted to put down mulch. How thick should the mulch be?
About two-three inches should do it. You might want to keep it several inches away from the hostas, because slugs love hostas and can hide in the mulch. Or sprinkle a circle of diatomaceous earth (the garden kind, not the pool kind)around the base of the hostas. You can skip the bowl-of-stale-beer slug trap -- it just lures them into the area.
