How do I replace posts on my porch, specifically how do I anchor them to the slab and the overhead wood?

I need to replace the posts on my front porch. How do I anchor the posts to the concrete slab and the wood overhead?

To attach the posts to the slab, it's best to use a bracket that the bottom of the post fits into. These are available in metal or plastic. They can be attached to the concrete slab using concrete screws. They give the added benefit of keeping a small airspace open between the concrete and the bottom of the wood post to allow drying (this is a common spot which holds moisture and causes the wood to rot).

Once the bottom of the post is secured, the tops can typically be attached by using long screws driven at an angle into the overhead framing. You could also cut the post height down slightly and put an oversize cap on the top of the post made from a piece of plank or plywood. This cap is fastened to the top of the post, then after the post is installed, is then fastened to the overhead framing.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
