139.53675SRT - 1/2 HP garage door opener. I modified the closing so that it stops when closed. It will only open 1-2 feet. I disengaged the door and it will open all the way and will hold open, it will also hold 1/2 way. It is a 2 car garage door - is it the number of turns on the newer fangled spring like thingy - this problem happened out of the blue. Nothing physical is blocking the door or the door opener unit that I can see. Before I modified the closing of the door it would close all the way and continue to reverse back open to about 1 foot. When I disengaged the opener, the opener continued past where the door stopped and stopped when it ran into the wall.
There are a number of things that might be happening.
Since the door will move smoothly on its own and stay at about ½ open, the spring balance and weight on the door should be okay. You still could have binding of the door movement when the opener is lifting or closing from above that you are not feeling when lifting and lowering the door from below, but it is not overly common.Even if the door is balanced properly and moves freely, the opener might have problems lifting the door if the force settings were off. So if you were accidentally adjusting these as opposed to your limit switch screws the problem might be there. But with it starting out of the blue, and with it trying to reverse and then running right to the wall even with the door disconnected, it sounds like the issue is still in the travel limits. It could be a bent or damaged connector in the Limit Switch assembly itself see item 16 in the image below or it might be a problem with the worm gear that drives the limit switches which is item 3.If the worm gear slips or jumps while trying to drive the limit switch it will throw off the start and finish point for the door travel. The gears might jump if the limit switch or the worm gear are damaged or, quite often, if the gear and sprocket assemblies are becoming worn. See item 2.Once the gear and sprocket are worn, the extra freeplay it creates between the gears allows them to move away from each other until they jump or skip and throw off the limit settings. The links below have further advice that might also be helpful.Member
