I pulled the emergency cord on my garage door opener and now the trolley won't reconnect?

I have a Sears Craftsman garage door opener. The power went out, so I pulled the red emergency cord. Now that the power is back, I cannot get the trolley to reconfigure with the mechanism that is connected to the emergency cord. The door is closed and the trolley is moving back and forth, but when it comes all the way to the front of the garage, it slides about 4-5 inches past the mechanism that it's supposed to be connected to. Any help?

The door release system is designed to stay in the released position until you manually reset the release lever position.

It is made that way so you can raise or lower the door fully even if the mechanism is stuck part way or in case you need to open the door manually more than once.

To reset the lever, pull the rope toward the overhead opener unit at about a 45 degree angle until the lever moves into position as in the images below.

At that point the trolley should reengage and lock in unless there has been some damage to it.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
