Why won't by light activate when my opener opens or closes the garage door?

SEARS GARAGE DOOR OPENER 139.655000 THERE IS A TIME DELAY SWITCH. THE METAL CONTACT ARM HAS WIRE COILED AROUND IT. WHEN HEATED THE METAL ARM WILL BEND AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE LIGHT CONTACT AND TURN THE LIGHT ON. IT WILL THEN COOL DOWN AND THE CONTACT ARM WILL MOVE AWAY FROM THE LIGHT CONTACT AND TURN THE LIGHT OFF. FROM WHAT I CAN TELL THE COIL OF WIRE ON THE ARM IS NOT GETTING THE POWER TO ENERGIZE IT. COULD THIS BE A CAPACITOR OR RESISTOR OR WHAT? THANK YOU

The part is not really a capacitor or resistor, but it does use electricity to open and close the contacts to help with the timing of the light as you mentioned.

There are no individual parts, so if electricity is reaching the delay switch and it is not working the light will not turn on and the delay switch will need to be replaced.

You can see the delay switch see item 35 below in the parts illustrations at Sears PartsDirect and you can order the part direct from there if needed or use the part number there to get the switch through your Sears Store.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
