Both my garage door openers are not closing properly after a lightning storm. What is wrong?

I have a problem with my garage door openers. Both are model #139.53225srt-1/4hp. We had a power surge from a lightning storm. Both openers have power to them. One door will not do anything except the light will flash when you try closing the door. The door will not do anything. You can't even close it by holding the button down. The other door has the flashing light as well but the door will move a very short distance and retract back. This door will close if you hold the button down. The green sensor lights will not light up on either door. It acts as if they aren't aligned but they are. I have aligned them but the lights will still not go on.

It sounds like the power surge that damaged both openers.

The one that will still close sounds like it may work properly and just needs some attention to the safety sensors. The sensors do need an LED lit on each or they are not getting power and not “seeing” each other. Either of those would cause the opener to react the way that one is. It might be a wiring problem or failed sensors, or damage to the logic board which is preventing power getting to the sensors.

The opener that does not work at all likely has a failed logic board; otherwise it should still over-ride the sensor circuit when you hold the button down as on the first opener.

Unfortunately, there will be little you can do until you have a set of sensors you know are working properly that you can use to test the openers. So you may want to invest in one set of sensors or consider consulting a professional for more in-depth testing, since that might be needed anyway for the opener that does not work at all.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
