The most environmentally responsible way to treat gypsy moth is to use a bacteria called BT or "bacillus thuringiensis". It is a biological/organic control that is harmless to humans. It's available at better-stocked garden centers under the names Dipel , Thuricide , and Caterpillar Attack.

Be sure that the label says "Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki". Other varieties (israelensis, San Diego or Tenebrionis) are ineffective against gypsy moths.

A tip: If the caterpillars are too big, controls won't work. Use controls only on caterpillars under 5/8-inch long. Be aware that BT also kills the caterpillars that turn into butterflies.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
