What is the best thing to put around asparagus to keep the grass down?

Spread 1-3 inches of mulch on the area to smother the grass. You can use straw, wood chips or bark, grass clippings, cocoan hulls, pine needles, or other biodegradeable mulch. Just avoid freshly shredded wood chips, which can temporarily rob nitrogen from the soil. You can put damp newspaper under the mulch for an additional barrier.
