How does one replace the lift cable on a Liftmaster 1/2HP garage door opener?

Liftmaster "the professional" 1/2 HP for residential use, which is about 10 years old, the cables on the lateral aspects of the door slipped off the wheels and I can't get the cable to reattach in the notches on the wheels at the top of the door. Help.

The assembly you are referring to is actually part of the door lift/springs and not part of the opener.

Different door manufacturers use different methods for counterbalancing the weight of an overhead garage door. Most use springs, on either side of the door, or above the door. The cable likely came off due to a problem with one of those springs but even if the door is perfectly installed, and travels freely, without binding, rubbing, racking (getting out of square), or sagging, adjusting the counterbalancing springs is not really a job for the do-it-yourselfer.

The energy stored in the springs is significant, as is the weight of the garage door, with no counterbalancing springs. Adjusting the weights is dangerous. We would recommend a professional make any repairs or adjustments to those components.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
