How can I tell if my potted plants are being over watered or not watered enough?
Most people overwater rather than underwater potted plants.
Water plants just when they're starting to show the very slightest signs of dryness, that is, shiny leaves lose their sheen, the plant leaf becomes less firm, the soil is very dry to the touch even when you wiggle your finger down into it a half inch or so, etc.And remember that every plant is different in its water needs, depending on its type, the container, and where it's planted. Wilting is the main sign that plants are not getting enough water. Do not let plants get to the wilting point or it stresses them and attracts pests and disease problems. Another sign that you aren't watering regularly enough is when the soil dries out completely between waterings and pulls away slightly from the pot. When you water the plant, the water runs down between the soil and pot, failing to wet the soil.To remedy this, allow the pot to soak in a pan or bowl of water filled so the water level is halfway up the pot's side for a few hours. This will rehydrate the soil completely and allow you to do normal watering from then on.Member
