How do I pour footings for a pergola and make them all the same height so they are exactly level?

I'm planning on pouring four footings for a 10 x 12 pergola, using Sonotubes as forms for the footings. How do I pour each one level with the others?

A water level is the easiest tool to use for this. You can buy water levels or even make your own with a length of clear plastic tubing and water. Pour water into the tubing and you've got a level. Hold one end of the tube so that the water level matches the level of the concrete in one Sonotube, and the water level at the other end of the tubing will be at exactly the same height.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
