I'm unable to adjust my Craftsman garage door opener such that it won't hit the protective bolt on the up end?

I'm unable to adjust my Craftsman garage door opener (139.53975SRT1) such that it won't hit the protective bolt on the up end. I was able to adjust all other operations. Please help. Thank you.

There are separate upper and lower limit settings and if the upper one is not adjusting per your manual there might be a problem with the switch itself.

If you look at the limit switch assembly in the image below you will see a metal tab on the center screw. That tab moves until it contacts one of the metal tabs on the outside screws, one for the up limit and one for the down. If one of those tabs is bent or dirty then the electrical signal cannot be read as the tabs connect and the door will not stop moving.

If the tabs look okay, check the wiring from the upper limit switch screw to the control board, it might have broken or come unconnected.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
