My garage door opener will not work on the down position. It goes down for a second and right back up?

Craftsman model # 139.53535srt1 it can go all the way down only if I hold the button in. It comes up when I push the button and I want it to go down with just the push of the button not holding it. When I push the button it goes down a little and right back up and the lights blink but there is nothing in the way to make the sensors go off? I played around with the tension buttons to see if that was the problem because I did fix the spring that broke and it was working fine until I fixed it.

The opener is seeing some problem with the door sensors and reversing the door as a precaution to prevent it closing on anything that might be in the way. When you hold the button down continuously it will close because you are overriding the system. The opener allows override from the wall switch since an operator there should be able to see if anybody or anything moved into the way of the closing door.

If you just worked on the spring or lift mechanisms then one of the sensors might have been moved slightly out of position or one of the wires going to a sensor might have been damaged or broken. You should see a bright LED on each sensor. If one LED is off, dim, or flickering you have a misalignment between the sensor “eyes” so they cannot see each other or possibly one sensor has lost power supply altogether.

There are more details in your owner’s manual that should help further or feel free to submit another question if you need or if some other issue seems to appear.

The override function is intended for emergency situations only and we would recommend the door not be used until the problem is addressed. The safety sensors are a very important safety precaution since a door opener has enough power to cause a lot of damage or serious injury when closing which is one reason the safety sensors have become required by law.

To view the Owner's Manual online, go to the Home page of Manage My Home and hold your mouse over the square labeled HOME in the upper left of the page. A drop-down menu will appear, choose the option Products and manuals and then enter the model information and follow the steps.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
