Can you reset the travel limits on a Garage Door Opener? Mine works one day, not the next, no adjustments seem to work?

My GDO, Mod 139.53991, was working fine, when it got cold, I made adjustments to down and up limits. Worked fine for a while, now it is possessed! One day it closes fine, the next day the door stops five inches off the ground, the next day, after trying 10 to 15 times, I have to close it manually. On up limits - I adjusted and everything was fine for three cycles, on fourth cycle, it runs into the end of the track. Please help. is there a way to reset this and start from scratch? Is there a way someone can contact me for support? Thanks

There is no reset for the travel limits since they are mechanically driven and not electronic on this model. You just need to set the stop positions for up or down by adjusting each screw on the overhead opener individually as noted in your owner’s manual.

Most likely you have something loose or a damaged gear on the limit switch assembly that is allowing the drive gear to skip a tooth or two which changes the overall settings. That would explain why the door stops short and also tries to open too far; the overall range of door movement is the same but the start and stop points both moved.

If you remove the covers you can inspect the limit switch, see the image below or in your owner’s manual. The limit switch is reference key number 6 and is also shown in detail in the upper right. Look for damage on the drive gear of the limit switch or the gear it connects with. It might only be a damaged gear but the limit switch could also have shifted or moved when you made your adjustments and that may have started the problem so check everything over carefully.

If no problem is apparent you may need to consult a professional for more in-depth diagnosis.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
