In the past I had a wide variety of blooms, but last spring they were not half of what I had in the past. I had tried thining them out the fall before and do not know if that may have been the problem. It may be too late to do anything about this year's blooming season, but what should I do when the blooming season for the iris is completed?
Aren't irises wonderful? So reliable, and such gorgeous colors.
Thinning is a good idea for many overcrowded perennials, including irises. Crowded plants bloom less over time. Your irises just might be recovering from the shock of being thinned. If so, they'll be back in force next year.A few other factors can cause irises to bloom poorly: too-deep planting (they like being right on the surface); not enough sun, water or nutrients; and iris borers, who leave mushy rotten spots in the rhizomes.Member
