Have a Sears garage door opener but no remote. I bought a new one but have no way to match the switches if I don't have the old one?

Have a Sears opener 139.654300, lost remote. Bought new one and a universal from Sears. Instructions say to set switches to match old one. If don't have old remote how do you get around this. Wall mount doesn't have switches.

Some older garage door openers did use a set of dipswitches to program. In that case there will be a set of switches in the overhead opener itself and all you need to do is set the switches in the remote to the same positions as the ones in the opener.

Many of these older openers, however, have been updated over time with newer style control boards or conversions kits. In that case, they use remotes that do not have any switches and programming is done with a Smart or Learn button on the opener or on the conversion box. So if you are seeing one of those buttons you will need the conversion kit remote based on the conversion kit number or the remote to match whichever logic/control board your opener currently has in it.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
