What causes my toilet to run/flush periodically? It makes a slight overflow sound for a few seconds, about once an hour.
Usually, changes or variations in city water pressure is what causes toilets to run intermittently. The valve, which shuts off the water to the toilet, is controlled by a float. The tank fills, lifting the float, which eventually shuts of the water but the valve is barely closed. A surge in city water pressure will be enough to overcome the pressure holding the valve closed, and a little more water sneaks into the tank. Depending on the valve, you may be able to adjust the valve or the float to prevent or reduce further occurrences.
