How would I fix a leaking outdoor faucet?

I have an exterior faucet that leaks when I turn on the faucet. Someone told me the leak is related to the anti-siphon (?) feature of the faucet. How would I fix something like this?

And outdoor faucet could be leaking it one of two places -- from the packing around the valve stem, or from an anti-siphon device.

If the leakage is occurring at the packing, the packing nut simply needs to be tightened. If the leakage is occurring at the anti-siphon device, you may have to replace it because most don't have replaceable parts. Some anti-siphon devices are integral, while others are add-on units.

The anti-siphon device has been installed becausean outdoor faucet with a hose connected to it, is a potential source of a cross connection. A cross connection allows waste water (in this case dirty water in a bucket) to be siphoned back into the potable water supply. For more information, read the link below.

can I replace the anti-siphon device? I've taken the cap off and in trying to remove or replace the plunger, smashed it so that it'll definitely not work now!

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
