What could I have done while replacing the belts to cause the mower not to start?

I replaced both belts on my lawn mower model 917.258215 this weekend. After putting everything back together, when I tried to start it, it almost started but didn't. After that first time, when I turn the key nothing happens at all. What could I have done while replacing the belts to cause it not to start? Before I replaced the belts, it was starting and running fine. thanks.

It is possible that an incorrectly installed or adjusted belt is not allowing the engine output pulley to spin freely.

This model relies on a change in belt tension to engage the mower blades. So if the belt going to the pulley under the engine is too tight then the starter would be trying to turn over both the engine and the mower deck blades. That extra load on the starter could explain why the engine never started the first time. And the increased electrical draw from the starter may have blown a fuse, which would explain why nothing happened when you tried again.

Another possibility is that during working on the unit the key was accidentally switch to the on position or some wiring accidentally unplugged or damaged. Either of those could have drawn down the battery voltage until it was too low to start the mower.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
