Are there any rules about the construction of walls in garages?
Yes. Walls separating dwellings from garages have to be gastight in Canada and fireproof in the United States. A wood stud wall with appropriate drywall can achieve the necessary fire separation. Drywall joints should be taped and there should be no penetrations through the wall.
Inappropriate fire or gastightness may be the result of original installation, subsequent mechanical damage or intentional penetrations. Exhaust fumes or fire and smoke in the garage can enter the house if adequate fireproofing or gas tightness is not maintained.
It's easiest to check this wall from the garage side. Make sure that there is a suitable finish on the garage wall. Look for gaps or other openings in the wall surface where the wall joins the house.
